  • Overview

    The Engineering Manager is responsible for a portion of the engineering function at the direction of the Director of Engineering or the VP of Engineering. The Engineering Manager will manage employees, budgets, and schedules to generate relevant Customer Solutions scenarios and the then validate the functionality and performance characteristics of those solutions.

    Responsibilities

    • Utilizes technical competence as well as the managerial skills to manage engineers and teams of engineers, along with corporate resources, to design, develop, and deliver Customer Solutions results
      • Partner closely with Sales, Sales Engineering, Tech Marketing, and R&D to define and evolve the needed Customer Solutions definitions
      • Work with team to define the tools, processes, and methods to validate the functional and performance characteristics of each solution
      • Work with team to define reporting formats, tools and cadence for all validation results
    • Direct and manage multiple concurrent engineering projects while ensuring their success in meeting their respective objectives
    • Implement approved engineering budgets and monitor actual expenses to ensure they fall within budgets, analyzing out of budget expenses and ensuring they are offset in other areas of the project unless fully justified
    • Consult or negotiate with partners to finalize engineering project specifications
    • Negotiate with 3rd party engineering suppliers to get the best business deals
    • Present engineering plans, progress status updates to project stakeholders
    • Review and approve proposed engineering designs and subsequent product and process enhancements or changes
    • Perform administrative and oversight functions in approving proposals, expenditures, enforcing policies and hiring and firing of engineers
    • Identify promising areas of research or technology that address unmet needs
    • Take long-term view and build a shared vision with others, act as catalyst of organization change
    • Select, develop, motivate, and deploy staff of highly competent managerial and professional employees to effectively support the function
    • Recommend proposals considered feasible to Engineering Management for consideration and allocation of resources
    • Develop and implement methods and procedures for monitoring projects, such as preparation of records of expenditures and research findings, progress reports, and staff conferences, in order to inform management of current status of each project
    • Track industry trends, relevant legislation, and competitor activities
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • At least 5 years of network topology, configuration and setup experience
    • In-depth and thorough knowledge of networking products, strategy and analytics
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
    • Demonstrate excellent project management skills, with a proven track record of successful delivery of projects on time, in line with budget expectations and to strategy
    • Creative thinker with an open mind to learn and explore new areas and opportunities

    Desired:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Systems, Electrical Engineering, or related field 
    • Management experience in the technology industry

    Typical Physical Requirements:

    • Constantly involves sitting, talking, and hearing
    • Occasionally requires standing and walking
    • Must have sufficient manual dexterity to work with the fingers and to reach/handle items
    • Involves light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a primarily administrative nature
    • Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 20 pounds
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision
    • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (i.e. computers, printers, or light traffic)

    Travel Requirements:

    Must be able to travel at times throughout the year.
